Is My Computer Slowing Down – Or is it Me?
One of the most frequent complaints we get from our clients is, “my computer is running so slow! It seems like it’s getting worse! Is it the computer, or is it me?” We often find solutions for our clients with one of the items below.
- Computer clean-up: You’ve heard of cookies and probably of temporary internet files. Maybe you remember defragmentation. Anytime you use the internet, many things find their way onto your computer – and stay there. There are several good programs for computer clean-up. But beware, some of them might clean up more than you want.
- Computer hard drive: Our clients love photos. And videos. And music. And reports. Sometimes we find duplicates – or triplicates. Sometimes we find multiple users, each thinking they can use the entire storage space. If your closet is overstuffed, it is easier to find your favorite jeans if you donate some items. The Goodwill would love your bellbottoms.
- Outdated operating system: Microsoft is on Windows 11 – are you? The update isn’t as bad as it sounds, but things will look different. And if you’re still using Explorer – we really must talk.
- Old modem/router: You know how fast mobile phone technology is changing, and the same is true for modems and routers. One client had the cable company ship a newer model, and download speeds tripled. This solved his problem of frame freeze on zoom and getting kicked out of client videoconferences. [Are you turning your camera off to save bandwidth?]
- Computer processor: The processors are changing fast here, too. If you’ve upgraded cell phones twice since you upgraded your computer, it’s like you are still watching Grey’s Anatomy for the first time. Yes, your computer was fabulous when it came out, but streaming services, websites – even email in the cloud – demand more. Maybe it’s time for new. Heads-up: Migration to a new computer is no picnic.
If you’re still wondering, “is it my computer or me?” The answer is: yes/ maybe/ both.
At CJNS, we help clients with the easy stuff first. When they need a deeper dive or a new system, we help them with that, too.
